Armador Carmenere, Odfjell, Central Valley, Chile

A medley of aromas from blackberry and dark chocolate to more savoury, meaty notes. The palate displays ripe dark fruits but also coffee and liquorice. The ripe present tannins offer a solid structure and the layers of complexity keep your attention. The is both elegant and enduring. This organic red wine was matured in oak for just 5 months so the wine is soft and round, but still vibrant, playful and just a bit punchy.

Food Match: There aren't many red wines that can be said to match with curry but Carménère is the exception. Stewed plums on the palate go really well with grilled meats, flavoursome veggie dishes and even a fruit crumble.

Want to know more about the producer?

Over 25 years ago, Dan Odfjell the Norwegian Armador (ship owner) fell in love with a small corner of the Maipo Valley. Serendipity would later show that he had found land in Chile’s premium red wine producing valley, where vitis vinifera has been cultivated for 400 years. While most of the other top producers in Chile are working with relatively young vines, Odfjell have forged an unique reputation based on rediscovering the forgotten wealth of Chile's winemaking past. At the time this was considered a very eccentric move but now the interest in these old sites has grown exponentially, in no small part thanks to Odfjell. Crafting wines that fully maximise the great potential of the region, this year having joined the new association of Vignadores de Carignan, Odfjell are committed to sustainable agriculture and green winemaking practices, the vineyards are all cultivated organically and biodynamically and are working towards certification.

Viticulture: The quest of Odfjell is to make wines that are a true expression of the terroir of our vineyards. Their low yield vineyards are handled with individual care, where they handpick the grapes bringing the fruit to the cellar as intact as possible. They began planting vineyards on the estate over 15 years ago, selecting only red varieties. Today they have 85 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, aromas of cherries, figs, violets and white fruit aromas such as apricots and pears. Carménère, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec planted in Maipo. They have also acquired vineyards in Cauquenes and Curico with old vines of Carignan and Malbec where we practice organic farming. Odfjell is committed to be a leader in progressive vineyard management, dedicated to elevate the image and practice of viticulture in Chile. The aim of this work is to produce the best possible wines in the vineyards, together with a long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture and "green" winemaking practices.

Winemaking: The grapes were hand picked. The grapes were not crushed on reception at the winery, the clusters were only de-stemmed. The whole berries had four to six days of cold maceration at 14ºC prior to fermentation and one to ten days of maceration at 25ºC after fermentation. Selected yeasts were used during the fermentation, which took place in small tanks from 10,000 to 40,000 Lts. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in tanks. A fifth of the wine was aged in used oak barrels (two and three years old) for up to five months.

Odfjell adheres strictly to Green Principals, which are those that demonstrate a responsible and sustainable approach to viticulture, vinification, commerce and community:

Rational producers demonstrate that they use the least amount of intervention in the vineyard and winery to make the best possible wine.

Sustainability has been a core value since the beginning. Odfjell work in harmony with the environment. Progressive vineyard management with 100% certified organic vineyards and biodynamic farming practices. Planting grass between vineyards to improve nitrogen levels. Creation of ecological islands’ promoting biodiversity. Apicultural management of bees to establish natural balance. Use of Fjord horses for vineyard work to avoid soil compacting. Use of ecological glass and recycled paper stocks to minimise CO2 and forest degradation.

Fair producers demonstrate a fair and even-handed approach in all aspects of how they conduct business.

Odfjell is an active participant in several associations, including: the Norwegian – Chilean chamber of commerce, Wines of Chile (Chilean wine producers), AG Orgánicos del Centro Sur (Organic producers association), and VIGNO (Maule wine producers association).

Caring producers go the extra mile to ensure the sustainability and welfare of the communities around them.

Workers are sought locally; more than 80% of employees live around the winery with comfortable on-site housing offered to employees and their families. The winery is an active partner in the municipality regarding social programmes. Fjord horses assist in the community through interaction with children with disabilities.

Fantastic in every way.

Absolutely fantastic flavours and a joy to drink!

Another good wine from Armador

Sweet and jammy at first on the nose, slight peppery spice, very easy drinking and enjoyable. A good well rounded wine which is good for any occasion and suited our Spaghetti and Meatball dish perfectly. Another great bottle, at an excellent price, from this producer. If you have not done so already, then consider trying the Syrah and the Cabernet Sauvignon.
