MR De Compostella 2015, Raats Family Wines, Stellenbosch, South Africa

Syzygy

MR is an abbreviation and short for Mvemve Raats, the surnames of the 2 men who created this wine as equally, Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer Raats.

At a time when the racial divide across the South African nation was possibly at its greatest verges, MR De Compostella was bridging the gap and making waves. This was the first ever wine in South Africa to be co-created by 2 passionate and driven craftsmen who also happen to have different colours of skin.

The Wine

This is wine! It is true to its form and honourable to a fault. It has a deep, dark intense ruby colour. Aromas of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit with hints of violets, cedar and cinnamon. Its rich and complex with minerals, black berry fruits and dark chocolate on the finish.

This wine is seamlessly created using just enough of each of the five Bordeaux varietals to ensure none dominates. This wine has a meticulously consistent flavour profile with a round and polished finish.

Blend: Cabernet Franc 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 32%, Malbec 14%, Petit Verdot 11%

ABV: 15.5%

Food Match

The best way to enjoy this is wine, is with a perfectly medium-rare fillet steak!

The Producers

Bruwer Raats and his mastery of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc is bringing him praise from around the world as "the most exciting and forward thinking winemaker" in Stellenbosch.

Looking at the very long list of awards and accolades, this man proved beyind ny doubt that he deserves his reputation and stature. As part of the new wave of South African winemakers he crafts soil specific wines that embody the unique characteristics of the region. Raats has been named as Platter's South African Winery of the Year with no less than eight 5 star wines!

Mzokhona Mvemve previously studied chemical engineering before turning his hand to wine making. When he first started within the wine industry, he was employed and happy to learn his craft from the very bottom rung of the ladder.

After learning the ropes and climbing the ladder, he is an accomplished wine maker and he has become known for his impeccable judgement and always making the right choices, even when it was not the easiest option!

He talks of quality by design rather than by default - the current obsession with old vines in South Africa may be admirable but Bruwer believes that better results can be obtained from the right variety planted in the right place. Planting and cultivating the right vines using this considered approach, often using high density planting, is beginning to yield the results that suggest he is on the right track. As an endorsement of his ascendency, Raats has been named as Platter's South African Winery of the Year with no less than eight 5 star wines!

The Vineyard & Winery

Each variety was harvested separately from specially chosen vineyards in the Stellenbosch area.

With hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing and using natural fermentation without fining or filtering it helps him create wines that are world class.

Each variety will spend 12 months in French oak barrel as a single variety wine before the wines are skilfully blended. After this, the blended wine is then matured for another 12 months, spending a total of 24 months in barrel. A third of this blend will be in new French oak, a further third in 2nd fill and a final third in 3rd fill French oak barrels.

Each variety was harvested separately from specially chosen vineyards in the Stellenbosch area.
