Orzada Carignan, Odfjell, Maule, Chile

Deep and so satisfying organic Carignan is intense in its ruby colour with a touch of violet. Among Chile’s emerging crop of high-end Carignans, this is one to try immediately and over the next two or three years. This wine displays a never ending mix of aromas such as cherry liqueur, liquorice, black fruits and mushrooms.

The palate is soft fleshy, with flavours of blackberry and fine herbs. Elegant and mature in profile, the palate is juicy and round with an abundance of ripe tannins and a long and complex finish.

Food Match: This rich Carignan would go especially well with grilled meat or lamb.

Chile organic certified

The History: Over 25 years ago, Dan Odfjell the Norwegian Armador (ship owner) fell in love with a small corner of the Maipo Valley. Serendipity would later show that he had found land in Chile’s premium red wine producing valley, where vitis vinifera has been cultivated for 400 years. While most of the other top producers in Chile are working with relatively young vines, Odfjell have forged an unique reputation based on rediscovering the forgotten wealth of Chile's winemaking past. At the time this was considered a very eccentric move but now the interest in these old sites has grown exponentially, in no small part thanks to Odfjell. Crafting wines that fully maximise the great potential of the region, this year having joined the new association of Vignadores de Carignan, Odfjell are committed to sustainable agriculture and green winemaking practices, the vineyards are all cultivated organically and biodynamically and are working towards certification.

Maule Valley (35o 44’43’’ S) 195m above sea level. Mild climate with a dry season of five to six months duration. The annual rainfall is 700mm concentrated between October and April. Sandy clay loam soil with presence of granite along the profile.

Time in oak: 12 Months

Amazing wine that holds it own with or without food

Big punch of fruit on the nose - fresh, ripe blackberries and raspberries and mild leathery and tobacco spice coming through, with a hint of chocolate. A very fruity and deceptively smooth wine. The spice on those nose is surprisingly counteracted by the strong and sweet fruit flavour. Overall a very impressive, big, bold and fruity wine and is as equally as tasty on the palate.
