Ventopuro Carmenere ‘Reserva’ 2014, Alto Colchagua, Chile

Intense aromas of mature red fruits, chocolate and spiced notes. On the palate it has a good concentration and velvety tannins.

Food match: perfect with pasta, white and red meats.

This wine is made from 100% Carmenere grape, now establishing itself as a ‘signature’ variety for Chile. The grapes were hand-picked between the 25th April and 2nd of May with a production no larger than 9.000 kgs/ha.. Once crushed, the grapes had cold maceration in tanks for 5 days at 10°C. Fermentation took place at a controlled temperature (28°C) in stainless steel tanks for over 7 days, where daily gentle pumping over with air was applied. After the alcoholic fermentation, a maceration (post fermentation) was done for 5 days. Half of the wine volume was aged in French oak for 6 months.

The grapes for this single vineyard wine come from 15 year old vines located in the Colchagua Valley, 150km south of Santiago. The Colchagua Valley is naturally warm and dry, but with plenty of water provided by the Tinguiririca River. It is famous for its steep hills – the foothills of the Andes and the production of high quality wines. The mountain chain makes this place ideal to produce unique red varieties, as the sloping vineyards pick up the maximum sunshine to ripen the grapes and cool air from the snowfields descends at night to give a significant diurnal temperature range which retains vital acidity in the wine. The vines are planted on loam and clay soils.

Ventopuro was established by a couple of Chilean entrepreneurs, Alfonso Undurraga and José Miguel Ovalle whom, after years of friendship, joined their viticulture dreams in creating this winery during mid 2005. Alfonso Undurraga grew up and formed himself professionally at Undurraga Winery, which was family owned; meanwhile, José Miguel Ovalle, as a winemaker and viticulturist, has been bound to the production of quality wines in Chile and abroad. Their vast experience in the wine industry has made them knowledgeable in the best valleys and grapes. They have also known how to establish close ties with their clients all over the world.
